Q. Are the physicians involved knowledgeable about sleep?
A. YES . All of our doctors involved are board certified sleep specialists.
Q. Are the technologists trained in sleep?
A. YES . Our Medical Director is a board certified sleep specialist.
Q. How long does the study last?
A. Normally, you will arrive at St. Vincent's Hospital at 8:00 p.m. for registration. Once you are escorted to the Center, the sleep technician will apply the equipment needed for the study. The study is usually over by 6:00 the following morning. If you work the night shift, you will be scheduled for a study during the day.
Q. When will I know the results of my study?
A. A sleep specialist will follow-up with you before you go home.
Q. Can I get up during the study?
A. YES . Should you need to get up for any reason, the technician will pause the study.
Q. Will someone be watching me sleep?
A. YES . You will be monitored by a sleep technician who is located in the control room. An infrared video camera system monitors you in the dark in order to maintain a comfortable sleeping environment. In addition, a hands-free intercom system is used, should you need to speak with the sleep technicians.
Q. How will I be monitored?
A. Electrodes are placed on your body to monitor your heart rate, brain wave activity and leg movement. Nasal airflow and breathing effort are also measured.
Q. Will I have to take off work to have the study done?
A. Typically, no. You can bring a change of clothes and personal items for the sleep study to ensure you are on time for work.
Q. How do I schedule an appointment?
A. Your doctor will need to schedule an appointment for you with a sleep specialist.
Q. Is the sleep study covered by my insurance?
A. Most insurance will pay for sleep studies. However, we suggest you call your insurance carrier representative for the correct policy information before scheduling an appointment.
