What is Infusion Therapy?
Infusion is the term for any sort of medication given through a needle or catheter – including an IV. Although infusions are relatively simple procedures, most insurance policies require they be done in a medical setting. Until recently, local residents didn’t have easy access to such therapies, unless they were admitted to the hospital.
How does it work?
The Outpatient Infusion Center helps qualified patients by providing them with quality infusion services and vascular access device care and management. Once a physician referral is received, the patient is seen in the center by our specially trained nurses. IV therapies or injections can be provided for the patient who requires monitoring during treatment, which eliminates the need for an inpatient hospital admission for these services.
Who requires infusion therapy?
Medical conditions treated can include the following:
- Infections of all kinds:
- Respiratory
- Urinary tract
- Soft tissue
- Post-operative infections
- Pneumonia
• Immune / Enzyme deficiencies
• Multiple Sclerosis
• Rheumatoid and other classes of arthritis
• Chronic anemia
• Iron deficiencies
• Osteoporosis
What types of medications are administered?
The majority of IV therapies administered are IV antibiotics, prescribed primarily for diagnoses such as cellulitis, sepsis, and osteomyelitis. Other diagnoses include urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and sinusitis. Other major IV therapies include total parenteral nutrition, hydration therapy, pain management, enteral nutrition, blood transfusions and other therapies.
