SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM

More than 10 million Americans are considered morbidly obese, defined as:

  • A body mass index of 40 or higher
  • A body mass index of 35 or higher, with associated life-threatening problems
  • 100 pounds or more over ideal body weight

For the morbidly obese, conventional weight loss methods generally fail to produce permanent weight loss. Weight loss surgery can produce profound, sustained weight loss. The St. Vincent's East Surgical Weight Loss Program, one of the first in the Birmingham area, has performed more than 3000 procedures, both Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass (RGB) and Gastric-Band.

In RGB, the size and shape of the stomach are surgically altered and the surgeon creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach to receive food. A segment of the small intestine is attached to the pouch so that food bypasses the rest of the stomach. Gastric-Band is much less invasive. The St. Vincent's East Surgical Weight Loss Program was the first to offer this procedure in Alabama.

Gastric-Band uses an adjustable silicon ring, placed around the stomach and tightened or loosened to control food capacity and appetite. Patients experience reduced surgical trauma, few complications, less pain, minimal scarring and a shorter recovery time.

In addition to weight loss procedures, the Surgical Weight Loss Program encourages participation in the Surgical Weight Loss Support Group. Those interested in surgical weight loss are required to attend a free seminar.
