The Access to Care Program is a safety net for many individuals in North Central Alabama who are employed but lack health insurance. Through the program, which has about 400 enrollees, individuals are assigned to one of St. Vincent’s Family Care Centers for primary health care services. St. Vincent’s works with each patient to identify ways to acquire insurance and screens patients based on a willingness to make life changes conducive to good health. This “access” to primary care is supported by St. Vincent’s Health System and through the generous gifts of donors which help to provide for patient services, case management, and urgent needs that arise with patients.
As the volume of patients seeking treatment continues to grow, so does the need of the Bruno Cancer Center to provide the best quality facility. Over the course of the past 17 years since the Center’s opening, massive technological advances have been and continue to be made in the treatment of cancer. Furthermore, feedback from current and former patients continues to provide insight into the services and accommodations patients require as they undergo treatment. In response to these changing needs, the Bruno Cancer Center is currently seeking to implement the following changes:
• Introduce the new TomoTherapy treatment process, the most advanced and innovative cancer treatment system currently available
• Introduce a new wide-bore CT scanner, providing a larger gantry opening for treatment of some patients who otherwise could not be treated, and so that all patients can be more comfortable and positioned so that the best possible scan can be administered
• Increase the size of the waiting area and the size and number of examination rooms within the center itself to provide a greater comfort and convenience for our patients
• Introduce a new entrance to the center, with more efficient valet services and more convenient access for entry and exit to the center For more information on the Bruno Cancer Center and our current initiatives for the patients and families of the Cancer Center, please contact Scott Powell at 939-7443 or scott.powell@stvhs.com.
$238,000 – initial two years of project fully funded through philanthropy. The Elder Care Services Program was created in response a need expressed by a donor to St. Vincent’s Foundation. That donor is a self-described Elder Orphan. She has few family members and no prospects to assist her with care as she ages. She worries about her future when the time comes when she is no longer able to drive herself to and from physician appointments and to the grocery store. She trusts St. Vincent’s to care for her medical needs and wondered if there was a way for St. Vincent’s to assist people like her who will need additional assistance as they age. The idea was presented to Susann Montgomery-Clark in the Foundation office, and after more than two years of focus groups and meetings with St. Vincent’s associates, the project was officially launched. Initial funding was requested from a group of focus group members who were supportive and excited about the project and a grant was obtained from the Daughters of Charity to begin work on the outline of services that the Elder Care Services Program might provide. Just in its infancy, the Elder Care Program has hopes to become one that assists our original donor and those like her who will need support services in their twilight years.
